I live in New York, and sell antique maps for a Highly Respected Dealer. I also wrangle html on their website.
I think a lot of people that might be interested in maps just don't know they're out there... If you'd asked me, 6 years ago, if there was a trade in antique maps, I would have scratched my head and said "well I suppose there *must* be" but I didn't know it existed until I basically lucked into it. There's a lot of the history of cartography that college history courses never get around to - and just forget about high school. The herky-jerky way that geographical knowledge was disseminated and published resulted in a lot of funkiness, and the often puzzling misunderstandings that early mapmakers labored under are I think a little complicated for the linear model of history that is generally presented at most levels of education. It's a shame, becuase there's a lot of fun to be had there.
